Alexander Hill Everett was a distinguished early American diplomat, writer, and man of letters. He entered Harvard at the age of twelve, and apprenticed at the law office of John Quincy Adams. He served in a variety of notable diplomatic posts, and contributed to the evolution of American culture and literary tradition. His emphasis was to encourage writers to look beyond the Anglo-Saxon tradition for their themes and inspiration.
